This is a couple years ago during a rare snowstorm in the Santa Cruz Mountains. I was headed out the door to drive up to the summit in my truck when the phone rang. It was a friend who wanted me to ride up the trail with him on our mountain bikes. It didn't take much for him to convince me to make an adventure out of it. It took forever to slog up the hill, it was like riding in wet cement most of the way. We weren't the first ones on the trail as we were following in another riders tracks. About 2/3 of the way up the hill the person in front of us turned around so we were riding in virgin snow the last third of the hill. The sun poked out a few times as we neared the top and the wind had all but died down. It was pretty and spectacular to see our local trail covered in snow. We hung out at the helicopter landing pad and checked out the view before heading down. The ride down was more exciting than the ride up as the steep slope made the trail extremely slippery. It turned out it was quite the ride, cold, wet and slick for us fair weather riders. Quite a few of our local rider friends were a bit jealous when we told them we had played hooky from work to ride in the snow. Definitely worth the effort!
